MISSION STATEMENT
To provide educational and instructional programs for the public designed to teach nature awareness, personal responsibility and environmental consciousness by creating an understanding of the need for simpler living based on needs rather than wants in order to reduce humanity's impact on the Earth.

Ready or Not?

Backyard Tourist, Inc. in partnership with Ready or Not Survival presents community events designed to "create awareness without precipitating panic." Based on the need for personal responsibility urban disaster preparedness training/workshops cover preparation and basic needs during an emergency and are available at no cost for community groups such as Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). In partnership with local cities and corporations, workshops are also provided for employees. All trainings are tuition free.

Introduction to Survival: thoughts and ideas

Also in partnership with Ready or Not Survival, Backyard Tourist provides seminars on Learning to Live with Less. With the economic downturn striking fear into the hearts of many, a few simple ideas about frugal living are the basis to a more positive outlook.

Coyote Youth - teaching self confidence and self esteem based on simple survival techniques

From 2002 - 2006 Backyard Tourist worked under a Federal grant, in partnership with the Poway Unified School District to provide programs for youth attending Abraxas HIgh School. We provided on-campus alternative curriculum programs and various After School Activities. We used outdoor education activities based on simple survival techniques and concepts combined with field trips, with all corresponding curriculum correlated to school standards to not only increase self esteem and confidence, but also to increase school grades and interest in literacy. As an on-campus program, we offered consistency to the students with greater results than a one-time program. Here are a few thoughts from the kids about the program.

Unfortunately, the funding ended in June, 2006 and the Coyote Youth program has been discontinued. However, Tom and Susan continue to work with local organizations to provide wilderness and urban survival programs for the youth of San Diego County. For more information, please email Susan.

C.O.Y.O.T.E. Coaching Our Youth On To Excellence!

Susan and Tom are available as consultants and/or motivational speakers. Based on simple survival techniques and designed to promote the concept of "needs" versus "wants" these programs can motivate students to develop a passion for learning and literacy.

And consider:

If the earth were only a few feet in diameter

floating a few feet above a field somewhere, people would come from everywhere to marvel at it. People would walk around it marveling at its big pools of water, its little pools and the water flowing between. People would marvel at the bumps on it and the holes in it... Read the entire poem:

How about saving our Earth, one bag at a time? Really. Ecobags - this is the way to go!
